Weaving a Gentle Future Together
Supporting Special Olympics Nippon

The Special Olympics is an international sports organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Its mission is to support the independence and social participation of these athletes. In Japan, these activities are carried out by the Special Olympics Nippon Foundation, the official national organization.
Sony Life began its support in 1996 through sponsorship and, since 2002, approximately 6,000 employees have participated as volunteers, helping sustain the activities of Special Olympics Nippon. At the heart of Sony Life’s mission—to walk alongside each customer and support a life filled with purpose—is a belief in honoring each person’s individuality and potential. People with intellectual disabilities realizing their potential and encountering new sides of themselves through their dedication and training—Sony Life employees have stood beside them for over 20 years, offering steadfast support. Witnessing these athletes shine is a deeply cherished and irreplaceable source of joy for participating volunteers.
A Legacy Passed Down
At the National Games held every four years—both summer and winter—many employees volunteer to support the event's operations. From setting up venues and assisting athletes to supporting competitions, employees help ensure the athletes’ shining moments come to life.
This initiative has been carried forward across generations by the Sony Life Volunteer Group, a volunteer organization established by employees in 1995. Volunteers who find personal meaning in this work join on their own initiative and have continued expanding the circle of involvement. There is a welcoming atmosphere that allows even first-time participants to feel at home quickly. The smiles of the athletes and the sense of unity among fellow volunteers create a powerful bond. The passion that has sustained this effort over many years is now being passed on to new teammates.
In 2026, the 9th Summer National Games will be held in Tokyo. Sony Life employees will once again participate as volunteers to support the efforts and challenges of many athletes.

The Joy of Supporting Courageous Challenges
The determined gaze of the athletes, their drive toward the goal, and the radiant smiles upon finishing—these scenes are filled with warmth, where people support one another and share joy together.
“Spending time with the athletes made me feel the profound value of each person simply being who they are. It led me to reflect more deeply on the meaning and significance of walking alongside others,” shared one employee volunteer. The insights gained through these interactions with athletes are carried back into daily activities, enriching how employees sincerely engage with each customer’s unique life and values.
Sony Life aspires to support the independence and social participation of as many individuals with intellectual disabilities as possible and to contribute to the creation of a kind, inclusive society that embraces diversity. With this in mind, we will continue to work toward a society where everyone can coexist and thrive.
Sony Life remains committed to creating new, moving moments together with the athletes. We will continue striving for a world where every person can shine with a sense of purpose.
