Sony Life to Offer Whole-Life Cancer Insurance (Non-Profit) (Summary)

Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Financial Holdings, will begin offering "whole-life cancer insurance (08) (non-profit)" on April 2, 2008. This new product provides wide-ranging protection over a long period; in addition to death due to cancer the policy covers costs associated with diagnosis through to post-hospitalization care. Sony Life can offer the new product at reasonably priced premiums because of a policy structure that features a low surrender payment.

Policy Features

  • Coverage provides intensive cancer protection.
The policy provides lifelong protection that covers hospitalization, surgical procedures and death. Furthermore, there are no limits to the number of days for which cancer hospitalization benefits are available, nor to the number of times that surgical procedures may be covered. As a result, policyholders are secure even in the event of long-term hospitalization.
  • Policies also cover in-home medical care.
The policy provides post-hospitalization care benefits for policyholders who are released into medical care from the hospital where they were treated for cancer.
  • Patients select their own diagnosis benefit, as a multiple of either zero or 100 times the daily cancer hospitalization benefit.
Policyholders can select a diagnosis benefit multiple of 100 or zero. By selecting 100, the policyholder receives a one-time cancer diagnosis benefit corresponding to 100 times the daily cancer hospitalization benefit. Selecting a diagnosis benefit multiple of zero means that the policyholder will not receive the protection of a cancer diagnosis benefit, but that policy premiums will be lower.
  • A low surrender payment rider allows Sony Life to offer the product for lower premiums.
The policyholder may elect to add a low surrender payment rider, which means that no surrender payment is made if the policy is cancelled during the policy payment period. However, policy premiums are commensurately lower.
  • The death benefit is paid even if death results from a factor other than cancer.
